Not For Sale President, David Batstone delivers Freedom Sunday broadcast from one of the largest Christian churches in the world after experiencing Japan’s earthquake.

Seoul, South Korea (March 15, 2011) - With a name meaning “all nations” in Korean, it’s only fitting that Seoul’s Onnuri Church joined over 2,000 faith communities in nearly 50 countries to pray for the emancipation of others. The service, held last Sunday, was a part of Freedom Sunday – an international worship event aimed to raise awareness and spur collective action against human trafficking...

By Waltrina N. Middleton
Minister for Youth Advocacy and Leadership Formation

Isaiah 61: 8
For I the LORD love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing;
I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
Isaiah 62: 8
The LORD has sworn by right hand and mighty arm: I will not again give your grain
to be food for your enemies, and foreigners shall not drink the wine
for which you have labored...

Congregations may wish to use this as a meditation on human trafficking and our response to it. The different sections of the meditation may be accompanied by a ritual of pouring Libation. Such a ritual is based in African tradition; water is poured into the land as a way of honoring and committing to justice for the land and its people, including the ancestors and generations yet to come.

Can we hear with the ears of Justice?
Hear the clattering sounds beneath the pots and pans in kitchens where more than hot meals are stewing for the greedy; for those who prepare the feast are the victims of greed and extortion, themselves hungry and starving for restitution from overstuffed bellies who refuse to share their crumbs.

Can we escape the stench of injustice?
The smell of slavery, forced labor, debt bondage, and slavery-like practices must fill our the nostrils just as it chokes the life out of children, women and men who are deprived of liberty, freedom and independence.

Can we be moved by Justice?
To clothe the factory worker with fair wages as she mends garments for major brands that profit from her toil?
To liberate the hands of the young boy solider forced into militia movements that inflict genocide?
To straighten the backs the farmworkers bent over in long labor to supply fast food chains?

Where is Love in Justice?
In the courage of those who use their freedom to set free those who are coerced into involuntary servitude and debt bondage.
In the persistence of those who use their pens to author policy and legislation, creating tough consequences for those who commit crimes against humanity. In the eloquence of those who use their voices to expose the camouflage hiding sex trafficking of young girls and uproot the foundation of gender-based violence.
In the strength of those who serve as bands of love to foster human security around the world, including the United States.

Are we vessels of Justice?
Can we recognize the traces of blood on our steel, cell phones, clothing and food supply?
Will we speak and become the front lines of activism? Will we faithfully offer recompense and stand in covenant with the survivors
of the fields, factories, mines, restaurants, private homes, militias, and globalized businesses?

Will Justice remember...?
...the sacrificial suffering of those who died and those who survive? ...those who look away from the abject reality of slavery? ...remember those who hold no one accountable for these crimes —not even themselves?

We are the sum of Justice.
Let us gather ourselves so the sums of our bodies, minds and spirits will speak!
Let us find justice within ourselves.
Ashe′ Amen.

When Harriet Tubman waged her historic fight against slavery in America, she relied on churches along the Underground Railroad to provide safe haven for escapees. Now, faith-based communities are once again acting to end slavery – creating a network of abolitionist churches across the globe.

On March 13th, the first day of the Christian Lenten season, thousands of churches spanning five continents will unite in their dedication to fight the modern trade in human beings. Through worship, fasting and prayer, Freedom Sunday will rally people of faith to join an international movement confronting human trafficking.

Freedom Sunday is the brainchild of the San Francisco-based non-profit, Not For Sale (NFS). Focused on more than 30 million people around the globe who live in bondage and forced labor, NFS equips and mobilizes activists to fight modern slavery in their own neighborhoods and internationally....

Yesterday was National Human Trafficking Awareness Day and I was fortunate to spend my day surrounded by professionals committed to ending slavery!

The Bureau of Justice Assistance and the Office for Victims of Crime, who fund forty anti-trafficking task forces throughout the United States and Saipan, in 2009 developed a plan to conduct regional training forums to bring together task force representatives from geographical regions to share criminal intelligence, current case trends, best practices for task force operations and, most importantly, identification and care of trafficking victims. By coincidence, January 11th and 12th were chosen as the meeting dates for over a dozen task forces from the western United States (Alaska, Hawaii, California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado) and the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan) to gather in San Jose. I was surrounded by almost 150 professionals from local and Federal agencies involved in anti-trafficking operations.

Over the two days we looked at various trafficking trends, shared our experiences and knowledge, and had detailed presentations on recent domestic servitude and commercial sex trafficking cases in the region. It was an excellent two days...

What is Happening right NOW

The monsoon rains are causing the worst flooding in Pakistan since 1929 and extremist groups are making the most of it, delivering food aid where the government and army are nowhere to be seen.

We want to be there for the people too. Help us to help them.

We especially want to reach out to the poorest most marginalised groups affected by the floods,

Last time there was a flood in Sindh we were there, mobilising our trusted Rapid Response Teams - getting food and supplies to people neglected by agencies of any kind.

Now the Government is specifically appealing to us to do it again. They know we can be trusted to deliver. It is vital we are able to respond to this call.

We want to help people in everyway we can. NOW.

Not only are our volunteers ready, but so are the students in our current training programme in Pakistan. They will interrupt their course to join our

RAPID RESPONSE RELIEF EFFORT

But we need your help!

We have manpower and know how, but the funds are with you! Let us work together.

The disaster is already on a scale beyond imagination and it is getting worse.

Please give generously, we will work hard, aiming to deliver your aid to needy people soon after we receive your gift.

For more information on how to give, please visit the YWAM Relief website.

About the book:

At least 1 in every 4 workers in Malaysia is a foreigner. Migrants have become an essential part of the country’s economic growth and productivity. Malaysia is also a country of refuge for tribes and nations from all over the world. However, despite their longing for a better country, migrant workers and refugees have not found an easy life. Malaysia’s laws, policies, and practices create an environment of vulnerability for both these groups in different ways. Unlike Malaysians, they are at a legal, social, and political disadvantage.

The reality of life in Malaysia leaves many migrants and refugees disappointed by the hopes they had of a better life. Migrant workers are vulnerable to exploitation and cheating. Because they are not given legal status, refugees are often arrested, detained in poor conditions, punished through imprisonment and whipping, and then deported.

Featuring photographs of migrants and refugees with stories that underscore their plight, Disappointed by Hope: Migrants and Refugees in Search of a Better Country is a call to compassion and action so that migrants and refugees are better protected from violence, abuse, and injustice.

You can order and read the book at the YWAM Penang website.
